Graz/Dortmund, May 2, 2011. The 1-Euro Discounter TEDi expands to Austria and opens its first store today, Monday, in Graz. The company, which was founded in 2004, operates just under 1,200 stores in Germany. Additional stores are already planned in Austria. The range of products of the 1-Euro discounter includes products for daily needs, gift and decorative items, toys and stationary, but also party items, do-it-yourself supplies, and drugstore items.
“The opening of our first store abroad is an important step in our company’s short history. Austria is an attractive market for us. In the medium term, we would like to open two new stores here every month. To begin with, we are planning between 20 and 30 stores through 2012”, explains Frank Oesterling, Chairman of the TEDi Executive Board. By the end of May, for example, stores are opening in Bad Hall, Grieskirchen, Voitsberg and Steyr. “We hope that the Austrians will enjoy shopping with us and will be satisfied with our product range”, adds Harald Evers, General Manager, Austria.
Good quality at a good price
Currently, TEDi sells approximately 3,000 different items in its stores. In addition to its standard range of products, which also picks up on current trends, the 1-Euro discounter also offers new, attractive, seasonal products, for example, during the barbecue or vacation season, or at the start of the school year. Approximately 60 percent of the items cost only 1 Euro, or less. In no way does the good price come at the expense of the quality of the product, emphasizes TEDi Executive Director Frank Oesterling. “Our products are the best example that good quality and good prices do not cancel each other out. Our products are inspected by the manufacturers on site and undergo additional internal and external inspections in Germany.”
The rapid growth of the company is also mirrored in the number of employees (m/w): In the meantime more than 8,000 people work for the 1-Euro discounter. From the beginning, TEDi was aware of its responsibility towards young women and men and created training positions from the first day on. The company trains roughly 150 apprentices in Germany every year, in eight occupations that require training.
In its expansion, TEDi places great value on environmentally-friendly and climate-friendly aspects. Since 2010 TEDI has been a partner in the EU GreenBuilding Program and already operates several stores in Germany which comply with the strong environmental and energy standards established there. Furthermore, since the beginning of 2011 more than two-thirds of all stores, as well as the Dortmund Company Headquarters, obtain certified Eco-electricity. The company will emphasize sustainable expansion in Austria as well. “We pay attention to ecological aspects when searching for suitable properties and favor buildings which comply with modern environmental standards”, explains the General Manager responsible for Austria, Harald Evers.
The 1-Euro discounter, TEDi, offers household items of all sorts as well as seasonal products at good prices.
With more than 1,200 stores, TEDi is the local provider among the 1-Euro discounters in Germany. Since the beginning of May 2011 the company is also represented in Austria. As yet, six TEDi stores have been opened there. TEDi’s growth is also mirrored in the number of employees: In the meantime more than 8,000 people work for the 1-Euro discounter. From the beginning, TEDi was aware of its responsibility towards young women and men and created training positions from the first day on. To date, 232 of them have successfully completed their training. Currently, 289 apprentices are being trained in eight different occupations. Furthermore, the company is also aware of its social responsibility: since 2007, TEDi has supported the “help and hope” foundation, which initiates social projects to help children in need.
