Light bulb guidelines

What should be considered for illuminants?

How do I dispose of light bulbs?

In order to answer this question, it is important to know the type of light bulb. The categories are as follows:

  • Incandescent bulbs
  • Halogen bulbs

These can be disposed of as regular household and bulky waste.
However,

  • any type of fluorescent lamps or discharge lamps (energy-saving lamps)
  • LED lights

must be handled like electronics and recycled.

If you're not sure, check for the pictogram that looks like a rubbish bin with a line through it.

These lights can be handed over to your local waste disposal contractor or brought to a special collecting station.

How to deal with broken glass

(Based on the example of an energy-saving lamp)

Energy-saving lamps require special treatment, since these lamps can contain small amounts of mercury:

  • caution – glass shards can cause injuries

  • pick up any large fragments, and use an object to sweep the smaller ones into a pile

  • small fragments and dust can be picked up by carefully applying a damp cloth or some adhesive tape

  • avoid using a vacuum cleaner or broom, since this can cause small fragments and dust to be dispersed

  • thoroughly ventilate the area

  • broken, faulty or disused lamps must be properly disposed of at a collecting station
